This is a spacious 2-bedroom rambler with an oversized 3-car garage. Something like this would be all I really ever wanted for my next home, before the one with the 6-bay detached garage, of course. But according to my research, to acquire said things, I’m going to need... [consults internet]... uh, “thems greenbacks, bitches,” or, “that money, honey.”

I can't say I have ever seen a 2BR place with a 3-car garage. #priorities

At the houses I’m currently looking at, I only have hopes for a one car garage. Starter home FTW.

Back when I live in a 1BR apartment I could get extra parking spots for $8/month.. They looked at me funny when I asked for two extra spots for my summer/winter cars.

We have a 2 car garage, it’s filled with house stuff though. Working on getting enough floorspace for a project.

Did you buy a car yet?

That’s oversized? It kind of looks like a normal 3-car garage around here. I once did one of those “Tour of Homes” things when my wife and I were thinking of upgrading. One of the houses was a typical 4 bedroom house but it had a 5 -car garage. It was a tandem one so there was the typical 3-car door set up but it was so deep you could get 5 cars in there. It was beautiful .

I call it oversized because I own a 1-car garage that fits one car and no more. This one has plenty of elbow room all around, but I’m sure oversized to most of you mean means yuuuuuuge

that’s what I’m working with right now.

NO

I’m in the same boat. One car garage that fits, barely, one car and nothing else. That’s why walking in to that 5-car was a religious experience.

I’d like a garage large enough to fit an actual automobile.

I designed an addition for my friend several years ago. From the front, it looks like a regular 3-car garage. The third bay though became three cars deep.

Oooooooo, I’ve always wanted the 2 + 1 garage. The one door is for the weekend car and the 2 for the project space / storage. And I’d make a nice little divider to keep the car nice and clean and free of saw dust.

Looks shallow, I saw a number of garages like this while I was shopping around but ultimately decided on a deep 2 car garage. I like this setup way better in practice, enough room for 2 cars, 4 motorcycles, and enough space to work on any of them with minimal rearrangement, plus this is with a 2.5' deep workbench along the whole back wall. I also scored it cheaper than comparable “three car garages” were going for.

I'm trying to figure out property offset rules so I can expand my 1 car garage to a tandem 2 car.

As someone with no garage, those pictures make me cry. How much is it??

About $330,000 :/

The struggle is real my friend. And from what I’m hearing, interest rates are in the way up and there’s a chance FHA could be going away in the near future. I don’t want to rush into buying a house, but I don’t want to pay out the ass for basic home either.

I should move to Seattle. A two-bedroom apartment in the suburbs is that much here in Vancouver...

You could do what my wife and I did: hold strong until we could get a conventional loan instead of an FHA. Hope you like Top Ramen, though.

[laughs heartily] NO!
This house is hours away from Seattle. You put this house and lot in Seattle, you’re looking anywhere between 750k and 1.2 million depending on the area.

Check your state housing authority - you can frequently get low down payments or down payment assistance for completing classes there.
![]() 08/29/2016 at 20:53 |
|
Ok, that makes more sense! Although even that sounds tempting...half-duplexes outside of Vancouver proper are $750k right now! And they were almost half that 5 years ago. Ugh.

Sounds about right. I was in an new Eastside (aka suburbs east of Seattle) townhome last month. 3 bedrooms, 1 car garage. $800,000. You can’t make this shit up.
![]() 08/29/2016 at 20:59 |

You are correct. I live in SC, and the State Housing Authority here does offer down payment assistance. But I have to find a good house first, and then hope the seller is willing to work with us as the down payment assistance can take a little bit longer than your average closing.

Well we’re ok with doing FHA. It’s just a matter of finding the right house in our price range. I live in a Charleston, SC and the cost of living here is stupid expensive.
And hey, I make a mean pot of ramen.
![]() 08/29/2016 at 21:14 |

Totally believable, same thing here. It’s looking like building a garage from scratch would be far cheaper than upgrading to an already-garaged house...
![]() 08/29/2016 at 21:34 |
|
For sure. It would’ve been relatively easy to do state where I used to live. I got an FHA loan here and it still took forever, but no way could I afford Denver now if I’d waited to save up for a conventional loan.
![]() 08/29/2016 at 21:51 |
|
Yeah, Charleston is the same way. The housing market here is booming and prices are only going up. At this point, we can’t even actually afford a house in Charleston. We’re having to look about 30 minutes away. It’s crazy.

I gave the wife a 300k new house budget since we are up about 75k in equity in our current house. She found one in a great neighborhood here in SLC for 260k on a quarter acre which leaves me plenty of money and space for a four car ( double deep 2 car ) garage with a lift. She’s the best.

my huge driveway is ok, it would be nice not to have to contend with my dad’s junk in the garage. Count your blessings man.

hey, I’m in Redmond, a Seattle suburb! trust me, houses here are pricey. our 2,200sqft house with 2 car garage from the 80's is worth 600,000 or so as of now....
so yeah, stay in Canada :) at least you don’t have trump....

au jebem ti to....
I mi imamo kineze, ali barem nije bas tako lose ovde...
sta treba da radimo je zaradimo ovamo, pa onda penzija u beogradu! napravi 'legalnu' kucu na bezaniskoj kosi kao I svi ostali, pa lagano :P
